A visit to Tierra del Fuego (Vuurland), Antarctica and Buenos Aires in 2018.
First, I made some long hikes in the remote mountains and national parks of Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire). In forests and near glaciers and frozen glacier lakes. I enjoyed some river + sea kayaking on the Beagle Channel too. The local guides were terrific and I had a few great companions. Wildlife, onshore and particularly on the islands in the Beagle Channel, was superb.
Second, I made a trip to Antarctica, by ship from Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego). This was an old plan and a long-lasting dream. In 2018 it became a reality. With Eline Ophorst, and a number of other cool, interesting & very funny passengers & boat crew. Although passing the Drake Passage on a relatively small ship with some heavy storms wasn’t easy, Antarctica was worth it without a doubt: it’s spectacular and exceptionally beautiful.
Finally, Eline and I visited Buenos Aires. We enjoyed the city’s magnificent tango in a local milonga and enjoyed tango in La Boca.
Last but not least, we visited the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo (‘Dwaze Moeders’) during their weekly demonstrations for justice – 41 years after the beginning of the ‘Dirty War’ in Argentina.
